This is something I was thinking of as I couldn’t get to sleep, and I realized something that I thought was profound-ish. It made me feel small, at the very least.

We have telescopes that can see twelve billion light years away. But suppose that there’s intelligent life with technology parallel to ours a mere 30,000 ly away. If they’re looking at our planet at this exact second, they’re seeing prehistoric man painting caves.

Suppose we go out further – to 100 million ly away. If there are intelligent creatures there, and they’re looking at planet earth right now, they’re seeing dinosaurs because of how long the light has taken to get to them.

This blows my mind every time I think about it.
